Function

Each one of them have different, yet vital, features which facilitate the process of hearing and balance. Hearing: When the sound waves come in the ear canal, then the eardrum begins to vibrate. Auditory Ossicles passes on the vibrations to the oval window, that is a membrane at the inner ear’s entryway. Balance: Balance is obtained via combination of the sensory organ in our inner ear, visual inputs, and information acquired from receptors in the body, notably around joints. The information handled in the cerebellum and cerebral cortex of the brain permits the body to handle the variations in speed as well as head’s direction.

Ear Conditions

  • Earache is one of the most common ear conditions. This could be due to several causes, and their severity varies
  • Swimmer’s ear (Otitis externa) is the inflammation of the outer ear (pinna and ear canal). Infections are most common cause in sudden cases however, chronic otitis is often due to dermatitis
  • Otitis media is the inflammation of the middle ear often caused by an infection
  • Tinnitus is the condition in which there is ringing in either one or both the ears. This often happens due to age related factors or some damage from noise exposure
  • Meniere’s disease is due to malfunctioning of inner ear on one side. Some of the common symptoms for this include vertigo, hearing loss, and pain
  • Cerumen (ear wax) is condition in which ear wax could adhere to eardrum or block it the ear canal. There is loss in hearing due to reduced vibrations of eardrum
  • Ruptured eardrum is due to sudden changes in air pressure, infections, severe loud noise which may cause in rupturning of the eardrum.
Above listed are some of the most common conditions in the ear, however there are few more such as Acoustic neuroma, BPPV, Cholesteatoma which is a mild condition.
