CARPAL TUNNEL SYNDROME: Symptoms, Causes, and Treatment

Written by Kausalya on

Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition in which there is pain, tingling and burning sensation in the hand and arm. It is a common condition and it occurs when one of the major nerves, which is the median nerve gets compressed when it travels through the wrist. The median nerve controls the movement of all the fingers and the thumb except the little finger. In most people, the carpal tunnel symptoms get worse if not treated early, so it is important to get diagnosed and start treatment as soon as possible. Carpal tunnel syndrome develops usually among women and older people.

Symptoms

The symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome start very gradually. In most people, the symptoms come and go. But, as the condition worsens, the symptoms continue for a longer period of time and the frequency also increases. Symptoms during the night are very common. The most common signs and symptoms are:

  • Tingling, burning, numbness, and pain in the middle, index, ring finger, and thumb.
  • The pain and tingling may travel upwards from the hand towards the shoulder.
  • Shock-like sensations in the thumb, index, middle and ring fingers.
  • Weakness and clumsiness in the hand.
  •  Dropping things due to weakness and numbness.

Causes

A combination of factors can give rise to carpal tunnel syndrome. Women are thrice as likely to develop carpal tunnel than men because they have a smaller carpal tunnel. Other risk factors for developing this syndrome are:

  • Repetitive use of the hand
  • Heredity
  • Pregnancy
  • Hand and wrist position that cause extension or flexion for a prolonged period and increase pressure on the median nerve
  • Medical conditions such as thyroid imbalance, diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis are also associated with carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Trauma

Treatment

Carpal tunnel syndrome starts gradually but if left untreated worsens over a period of time and may lead to nerve damage. The various forms of treatment are:

  • Lifestyle changes:

If the syndrome is due to repetitive motion, then lifestyle changes such as taking longer breaks or reducing the activity can help. Stretching and strengthening exercises also help in relieving the symptoms.

  • Immobilization:

The doctor may prescribe to wear a splint that keeps the wrist from moving and to reduce the pressure on the nerves.

  • Medication:

In some cases, the doctor may commonly prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs or even steroids to reduce swelling.

  • Surgery:

If the above-mentioned treatment is not effective, then usually surgery may be prescribed.

Carpal tunnel syndrome is very common and may be cured if diagnosed and treated early.
