Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: Symptoms, Causes, and Treatment

A mental health disorder that causes abnormal levels of impulsive and hyperactive behavior is known as Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). People suffering from this disorder usually have trouble focusing on a single task and sitting still for a long period of time. The symptoms of ADHD begin in childhood, but this disorder can continue through adolescence and adulthood. Adults suffering from ADHD may commonly have problems with time management, being organized, holding a job, relationships, self-esteem, and addictions.

Symptoms

The symptoms of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are wide-ranging. Some of the common ones are :

  • Being forgetful about completing tasks
  • Having difficulty sitting still
  • Getting distracted easily
  • Having trouble concentrating on tasks
  • Interrupting people while they are talking

The symptoms vary depending upon the type of ADHD. The various types of ADHD are :

  • Predominantly inattentive
  • Predominantly hyperactive and impulsive
  • Combined hyperactive-impulsive and inattentive

Causes

ADHD is a very common disorder and yet the exact cause of it is still not fully known. The various factors that can lead to it are :

  • Heredity
  • Chemical imbalance in the brain
  • Changes in the brain
  • Inadequate nutrition, drinking, infections, smoking, and substance abuse during the pregnancy phase
  • Toxins
  • Brain disorder or brain injury.

Treatment

There is no cure for ADHD but the current treatments can help in reducing the symptoms and increase the normal functioning of a person suffering from this disorder. ADHD is usually treated with medication, therapy, education, and training, or a combination of all of these. The main types of medications used are often stimulants and non-stimulants. Therapy used is usually psychotherapy or talk therapy. Education and training commonly include social skills training, behavior modification and special education.

Several people suffering from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are usually able to lead happy lives with the right treatment. Therefore it is very important to diagnose the symptoms and provide treatment as early as possible.
