Placebo Effect: Useless or Mindful?

Written by Girish Khera on

Post so many years of reflexively treating patients through operations, surgeons have now discovered that most bleeding trauma patients fare best when left to heal without surgery. Rigorous trials on appendicitis too have now shown that the ‘surgical emergency’ often heals with antibiotics.

In medical practice, a placebo is a treatment that appears real, but isn't. It is the process of training the mind using pills and therapies, which sometimes seems to have a remarkable effect on overall healing and body chemistry.

Placebos are majorly employed in medical studies to resolve if there is a considerable, measurable difference between the treatment being tested and the effect the mind has over the body.

A placebo can work even when the patient knows it is a placebo. However, that does not necessarily make it the preferred method of handling pain or something that will be similarly efficacious across all patients.

The usefulness and appropriateness of a placebo treatment can vary between patients and situations, and proper preparation, administration, and follow-up are required to maximize the benefits while reducing the risks.

However, let’s not miss out the misleading aspect of placebo...

Among the most common surgeries in the US are those for back pain, extraction of tonsils, heart bypass, ear tubing, coronary stenting, and removal of gall bladder. None of these have been tested for their fakeness, and the few that have been tested in randomized trials of any kind have categorically failed. 4 clinical trials of spinal fusion surgery suggested that it wasn’t any better than alternative nonsurgical treatments (supervised exercise and therapy to help patients deal with their fear of back pain), and still, its rates continued to soar in the U.S. until 2012.

In other words, the surgical procedures, unlike drugs, are implemented without any regulation, and even if an operation fails the ultimate test of random clinical trial, the practice is still continued and offered to the patients.

While in many cases it seems useful to achieve benefits with a placebo surgery and most sham surgery trials have even contributed to increased longevity and quality of life in industrialized settings, operations routinely performed by physicians are, by ethical and scientific standards, more than invasive and risky.
