Dental Stem Cells can shoo Away Root Canal …

Written by Girish Khera on

A implant of dental stem cells can potentially eliminate the agonizing root canal surgery completely.

Usually when a tooth infection reaches a stage when it eventually causes erosion of the outer enamel and starts penetrating the tooth, there is a risk of damage to the soft pulp tissue inside. At this stage, either the extraction of the tooth, or a repair procedure called a root canal, becomes absolutely necessary.

The pain is usually symbolic of the fact that the cavity has hit the nerve and vascular tissue of the tooth. A root canal is done to save the tooth, however, nerve sensation is lost during the procedure. So while this tooth still aids in chewing, since no living nerves remain in it, it cannot detect any further decay or infection until it spreads to surrounding living tissue.

The existing dental fillings are incompatible with pulp tissue and, hence, toxic. Researchers from Harvard University and University of Nottingham have developed a special dental filling that stimulates tooth regrowth and repair. The filling is composed of dental stem cells which not only aid in the repair and regeneration of the pulp, but also encourage the growth of dentin- the protective, bony layer that sits on top of the pulp tissue and acts as a barrier between enamel and soft vascular tissue.

According to the statistics, half of US children under 15 have had at least one cavity; and a quarter of adults over the age of 65 have lost all their teeth.

The treatment by dental stem cells prompts regrowth of tissues and is , therefore, a part of regenerative medicine. There is significant interest in figuring out how to implement regenerative medicine to help people with cavities, injury or disease that lead to tooth loss. The replacement procedure for root canal treatment is only one example of how this emerging technology may be deployed in the future.
