Although animations have been around for awhile now, the concept of “making drawings come alive on screen” still seems pretty much magical to the layman. As a medical animation studio, it is important for us to educate our clients about the process of production of a 3D medical animation so that we are able to communicate effectively with them and manage their expectations. Here’s a step by step account of what goes on behind the doors of a medical animation studio:
Pre-Production: The Defining Stage
In this stage the production team makes an attempt to understand the story you wish to convey. An assessment of your brand guidelines comprising key objectives, requirements, timeline, budget, resources and target audience is made. The medical animation studio engages in further research by reviewing sources and interviewing experts to achieve a solid and accurate visual story. Important elements of this gathered information are fed into the script and style frames are outlined. The brief is used as the standard to design a fully-rendered narrative description of the script-- the storyboard.
The purpose of the storyboard is to give a rough idea of how the animation will enhance the script and the voiceover will match up the visuals. At this stage the client gets the opportunity to steer or amend the creative.
Production: The Development Stage
With the storyboard signed off and voiceovers approved, the medical animation studio prepares to begin with what they do best: animating. This is perhaps the longest phase as the entire story (scientific research or medical procedure) is weaved into an animation frame by frame.
A good medical animation studio is the where the production team experiments with more and more technical wonders by incorporating the latest equipment and animation software. It becomes imperative to feel the impact, appreciate the colors and designs, receive and process the messages, in order to create a stunning medical animation video.
Post Production- The Delivery Stage
Post production is the time to ‘garnish’ the prepared dish (aka medical animation video). The final video is edited and additions like compositing & visual effects, professional voiceover, music & sound effects, titles & captions are made in the medical animation studio. The graphics are made compatible with the animation software and the final video is produced in a format based on your technical requirements- website, iPad, Windows Media Format, QuickTime, DVD or any other.
And there you have it—a shiny new animation to share with the world!
